Soft Drinks Cause Muscle Weakness and Even Paralysis

Drinking several liters of acidic cola-containing soft drinks per day can cause a chronic depletion of alkalizing potassium in the body, leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis, according to Greek doctors.

While you might think that "excessive soft drink consumption at this level is so rare that it is not a public health issue," writes the author of an accompanying editorial in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, "we have every reason to think that it is not rare."

Dr. Moses Elisaf and associates at the University of Ioannina, Greece identified six reports of cola-induced potassium deficiency published since 1994. Quantities of cola consumed ranged from 2 to 9 liters per day.

Muscle complaints ranged from mild weakness to profound paralysis, and all patients had abnormally low alkalizing potassium levels in the blood.

"Fortunately," Elisaf and colleagues write, "all patients had a rapid and complete recovery after the discontinuation of cola ingestion and the oral or intravenous supplementation of potassium."

In his editorial, Dr. Clifford D. Packer at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, comments that "there is very little doubt that tens of millions of people in industrialized countries drink at least 2-3 L of cola per day."

Packer stresses that "the soft drink industry needs to promote safe and moderate use of its products for all age groups, reduce serving sizes, and pay heed to the rising call for healthier drinks."

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, Director of the pH Miracle Living Center, "sodas have a pH of 2.5 to 3.0 and an oxidative reduction potential of over +350 mV. This means that sodas are highly acidic and will compromise the delicate alkaline pH balance of the body leading to dis-ease. Sodas contain the acids of carbonic acid, citric acid, sugar and many times caffeine that can make you sick, tired, overweight or underweight. Eliminating acidic soda water, colas or soft drinks will reduce acidity in the body and thus reduce the symptoms of acidity, including irritation, inflammation and even degeneration."

The list of reasons why soft drinks are unhealthy gets longer and longer. It's a wonder why despite the known health hazards of soft drinks, people continue to drink this carbonated beverages like there's no tomorrow. The risks for obesity and diabetes are exchanged for a thirst-quenching sip of soda.

I'm not saying that soft drinks should be banned for eternity. But soft drinks should be enjoyed as a treat not as an everyday staple. Drinking too much will lead you to more health problems than one.

I just found your blog and am so glad that I did. Since I've been unable to bear children (and trying the last four years) I've been revamping my diet and have been introduced to the pH Miracle. At this point it looks like a complete overhaul of what I'm eating and I don't know how realistic it will be. But I look forward to learning as much as I can from you. I enjoy learning about "unconventional" methods of how to be as healthy as possible.
